A small personal note.

In case you were wondering why I haven't added a diary entry in a while, here is the excellent reason. It's with great joy that my wife and I introduce our second child, Isabella-Rose, born just before Christmas. She joins her 3-year-old brother Gabriel here in our studio for her first formal portrait. Love, Joshua Winterson.

We are hands-on parents, with firm beliefs in looking after the children ourselves, and spending every possible moment with them during the crucial early years. That's why I have blocked out much of this year, and have severely limited my availability. That hurts a lot financially, but the emotional rewards are so much greater. We also firmly believe that the long-term benefits of raising wonderful children into wonderful adults far outweighs all other concerns.

Of course, my photography continues, and you can look forward to more beautiful weddings and portraits appearing very soon, hot off my cameras as the work rolls on. Image-making is such a joy, isn't it? I look forward to hearing your comments on parenthood, and whether I'm doing the right thing by putting the kids first?

If you are interested in seeing more of my portraits, you can see some in here, and here.

Hi Joshua,

A very big congratulations to you and your family on the arrival of your daughter. She looks so precious!
Rodney and I also welcomed our second child in November - Charlie Rose McDaniel (I must say - great middle name!)
She's now 3 months and growing up far too quickly. She looks just like her big sister too.

I completely agree with your views on raising children. I wish I didn't have to go back to work, but I think I'll have to go back sooner than I'd hope. Taylor was in fulltime childcare from 2 years until she started school. even after that she was in before school care 3 days a week, and in after school care twice a week. It killed me.
This year I have vowed that Taylor won't be in any kind of before or after school care, and that Charlie's time in childcare will be very limited. Unfortunately this is something that is out of my control.

Keep up the great work you've been doing as a parent, and I look forward to seeing more of your work as a photographer.

Kind Regards,
Peta.

Big thanks to Peta for following my work and career.  Your wedding was so great; we still talk about that oh-so-sweet trip to Echuca.  Everyone seems to be having girls lately!  (And if you want a portrait of Charlie, don't forget I give DEEP discounts to former wedding clients ...)  Child-care facilities need not be viewed as a negative; if the alternative is a child who is spending all day cooped up with a stressed-out parent who yells at them all the time (or worse), then child-care can actually be something good.   Not that this scenario applies to you, of course.  But I don't mind admitting there's been a couple of days where it's been a bit like that here.  Parenthood is gruelling no matter how you go about it; and the pain is at least in equal measure to the pleasure.  Some days it's hard or impossible to keep your cool.  Most people I know had girls first, and they do seem slightly easier to manage in the early years compared to boys.  Healthy boys are loud and boisterous and always want to push the envelope to see where it will break.  (And we have a lot of broken things in our house now.)  And bright children, beginning early, also ask a ton of questions, all day long, which can make you question your sanity after a while.  But all in all, we consider ourselves enormously blessed to have such two fine children, and to live in a wonderful place like this. Gabriel is a regular attendee at Scienceworks, the Melbourne Museum, and the Botanic Gardens.  He gets taken to the local library once a week to get 25 new books, which are usually devoured within 2 days.  He goes to weekly music class.  He went on two international holidays before he turned 3.  He has a very nice life.  Anyway, I hope to do of portrait of Taylor and Charlie soon!  Love, Joshua
