The best aspect of running an ethically sound business is the clients who come back -- sometimes years later. Such was the case with Peta, who's wedding I photographed a few years ago in Echuca (sigh -- such a nice assignment). Peta was after candid and natural pictures of her two gorgeous daughters, Taylor & Charlie. She well understood that an outdoors shoot would result in much more variety than a studio setting. It took literally months for our schedules to coincide, and then we had to cancel the first shoot date because of all the crazy weather Melbourne's been having lately. But when we finally did the pictures yesterday, the results were worth waiting every minute for. Taylor & Charlie are camera naturals. Peta's going to hate me now -- there are dozens of beautiful pictures to choose from. Best regards, Joshua Winterson.
A note on the shoot for photography students: I always approach these jobs with a completely open mind, ready to try anything. I did suspect, though, that I would not be needing my hefty 200mm lens, and left it at home, which was a wise move on a hot day. Most of this was a free-ranging affair done in close-up, some even in wide-angle. I initially thought that toddler Charlie (only 13 months) might prefer to spend most of her time sitting on a blanket, but she had other ideas, and wanted to walk all around the park with her 7-year-old sister. This was fine with me -- I adapt to that, rather than trying to force a child to adapt to me. Another important factor in the success of the shoot was Peta's thoughtfulness in dressing her girls in such pretty blue dresses, which contrasted marvelously with the rich green grass of the park.
